FABLES-1
AESOP lived 2500 years ago in Greece. He didn't write down his fables. He told them to many people and they remembered them. Millions of people all over the world now read Aesop's fables and still enjoy them. Each of his fables has a moral. Among his fables you can find such classics as THE CROW AND A FOX, THE HARE AND THE TORTOISE, THE LION AND THE MOUSE, AND WOLF!WOLF!
The Lion and the Hare
Once a Lion saw a Hare. He cought it and was going to eat it when a Deer ran by.
«That Deer will make me a bigger dinner,» he said. He let the Hare go and ran after the Deer. But the Deer could ran very, very fast and the Lion could not catch him.
When the Lion saw that he could not catch the Deer, he said, «I shall go back for the Hare.»
The Lion ran back but there was no Hare there.
«How silly I was!» he said. «I cought a Hare for my dinner but I didn't eat it. I let it do when I saw a bigger animal.
I wanted too much and now I have nothing.
MORAL It is sometimes wiser to be pleased with what you have.
Answer the questions:
- What did the Lion once see?
- Did the Lion run after the Hare first or after the Deer first?
- Why did the Lion run after the Deer?

THE TRAVELLER WHO BOASTED
A man once went travelling to a far country. He travelled for a year and saw many places there. There was one place among them that he liked very much. When he came home he wanted to talk about it all the time.
People said to each other, «Why did you come back if it was so nice there?» «I came back to tell you about it,» said the man, and he talked and talked again.
«In that place,» he said, «all the man can jump well. One day we wanted to see who could jump the best. We all jumped. My jump was the best. I am a very good jumper.
It's a pity you didn't see how well I jumped.»
«Jump now!» said one of the men, «Show us here how well you can do it. Jump now!»
But the traveller could only boast well. And the people laughed at him.
MORAL People soon know who is a boaster.

Once there was a wise old man. He could answer any question in the world. Everybody knew about him. One day two boys said, « We are going to fool the old man. We'll catch a bird, go to the old man and say, 'We are holding something in our hands. Is it alive or is it dead?' If he says, 'Dead', we'll let the bird fly, and if he says, 'Alive', we'll kill it.»
They caught a bird and carried it to the old man and they said, « We are holding something in our hands. Is it alive or is it dead?'» And the wise old man looked at the young people and smiled. « It's in your hands,» he said.

THE HEDGEHOG
by Edith King
The hedgehog is a little beast,
Who likes a quiet wood,
Where he can feed his family,
On good and propper food.
He does not need to battle with,
Or run away from foes,
His coat does all the work for him,
It pricks them on the nose.
Foe — враг
Prick — игла
CYCLING
When the sun is shining
And I know it will not rain,
I take my nice bicycle
And ride down the lane.
I like to cycle round corners
I like to ring my bell. I strain
And climb the hills,
Then ride down again.
That's how I like to travel;
It's better then a train,
Or bus or car or boat
Or even aeroplane.
FOUR LITTLE WORDS
There are four little words
That can help you a lot
When you hurt your friend
On purpose or not.
So say these words,
Don't wait too long!
If you've hurt you friend
Say, «I'm sorry.I'm wrong.»
I KNOW A GIRL
I know a girl, and who she is
I'll tell you by and by,
When Mummy says «Do this» or «that»,
She says «What for ?» and «Why?»
She'd be a better girl by far
If she would say , «I'll try.»
PARTY FUSS
I don't think much of parties,
It's a silly fuss they make -
Like putting on my new red suit -
But I do like party cake.
The games they play are not too bad,
Though I like the clown best.
But parties would be much more fun
If I weren't party — dressed.
Fuss - суета
THE CLOWN
Look, look, see the clown!
He's jumping up,
He's falling down.
He's holding a plate upon a stick,
He's dropping it,
«Oh, catch it quick!»
He's dancing with the baby-bear.
He's blowing bubbles
Everywhere.
He makes us laugh.
He makes us cheer.
He's gone. «Good bye!
Come back next year!»
WINTER SMELLS
Can you hear winter sounds?
Can you touch winter snow?
Can you smell winter smells as the candles glow?
Look in the window! What do you see?
A tiny gingerbread cookie tree!
A ball of holly, pine, and spice!
Winter smells are very nice.

CITY
Sing a song of people
Walking fast and slow;
People in the city,
Up and down they go.
People with their hats on,
Going in the doors;
People with umbrellas
When it rains and pours.
Tall people ,
Short people,
Thin people, fat,
Lady so dainty
Wearing a hat.
Straignt people,
Dumpy people,
Man dressed in brown;
Baby in a buggy,
These make a town.

MY PET
Someone asked me yesterday:
«Have you got a pet?»
I sadly have to answer them
«No, I haven't yet!»
But now I've found a butterfly,
And we are great friends, he and I.
JOHNNY BROWN'S SHIP
«What can I play at?» said Johnny Brown
When the rain was pouring, pouring down.
«If I have a ship I'll have some fun
And sail to lands where there's always sun!»
«You can have a ship,» said Mrs. Brown,
And she turned a table upside — down.
She took a duster, yellow as egg -
A lovely sail for the table leg!
How Johnny laughed when he sailed away!
And his mother cried «Hooray! Hooray!»
John loved his ship, and never again
Did he mind the outside, pouring rain.
Upside — down - вверх дном
never again did he mind - никогда больше не обращал внимания на...
ZOO MANNERS
Be careful what you say or do
When you visit the animals at the Zoo.
Don't make fun of the camel's hump,
It's very proud of his noble bump.
Don't laugh too much at the chimpanzee,
He thinks he's as wise as you or me,
And the penguins walking round the lake
Can understand the remarks you make.
Treat them as well as you treat you,
And you'll always be welcome at any Zoo.
Treat — обращаться (с кем-либо)

Who is the wind? Does anyone know?
Where does he come from? And where does he do?
Does he live in a cave, Does he talk with the sun,
And the breezes his children, And does he have fun
With the million of people He meets every day?
I think that he must In his own windy way!
A TERRIBLE DAY

I want to be beside the fire.

A FORGETFUL TOURIST
An English tourist came to Paris. It was his first visit there. On the same day he sent a telegram to his wife who was in London. In the telegram he told her the address of the hotel where he was going to stay. He also told her that he was quite well.
As he was in Paris for the first time, he was very eager to see the places of interest. After dinner he went for a walk and then decided to go to the theatre to see a new play. It was very late
when the play was over. It was time to go home.
But at that moment he realized that he couldn't get to the hotel: he didn't remember either the name of the hotel or the address. The Englishman was at a loss because he didn't know what to do. Suddenly he remembered sending that morning a telegram to his wife. So, late at night his wife got a very strange telegram: « Please send me my address at once.»

ON A RAINY DAY
Yesterday it rained cats and dogs. We had five umbrellas at home, but when I wanted to take one, I saw they were all broken. I decided to take all the five umbrellas to the umbrella-maker. So I took them and said, «I'll be back for my umbrellas on my way home in the evening.»
In the afternoon I went to the cafe to have lunch. I sat down at a table and began to eat. A few minutes later a young lady come and sat down at my table. I finished my lunch, got up and took her umbrella by mistake. But she said, « Oh, that's my umbrella, isn't it?» I saw my mistake and said, « Excuse me, of course. It's your umbrella. I'm very sorry. » « That's all right», she answered and smiled.
In the evening I went to the umbrella-maker and took all my five umbrellas. Then I bought a newspaper and got on a bus. The young lady was on that bus, too. She looked at my five umbrellas and said, « Not a bad day for you, eh?»
