TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT.
On April 14, 1912 the « unsinkable» Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage. She was packed with rich passengers, many of whom lost their lives as there were too few lifeboats.
In 1898 a novel was published, called «Futility», by journalist Morgan Robertson. It was about an unsinkable liner sailing from Southhampton on her maiden voyage. Full of rich passengers, it struck an iceberg and sank killing many of those on board. The name of the ship in Robertson's novel was «Titan».
Six years before «Futility» was published, W.T. Stead, a well-known reporter, wrote a short story that also predicted the sinking of the «Titanic». Stead was one of the 1.513 who died when the great ship sank.
Twenty-three years after the Titanic went down, a young seaman called William Reeves was standing watch on a steamer on its way from
Tyneside to Canada. The water was calm and there was no sign of any icebergs, but Reeves could not help worrying about what had happened to the
Titanic, which had gone done in similar circumstances, and he wanted to shout a warning. The only thing that stopped him from doing so was the thought of his shipmates laughing at him.
Suddenly he remembered the date, April 14. It was his birthday.
Not only that, but it was the date that the Titanic sank — the very day that Reeves had been born.
Unable to stop himself he shouted a warning and the ship came to a halt, a few yards away from a huge iceberg.
The ship's name? The Titanium.
